Rising in the West: The True Story of an "Okie" Family in Search of the American Dream
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (October, 1993)
Author: Dan Morgan
Average review score:

Anyone living in California should read this book
This is a fascinating book on the migration of people from the Midwestern Dustbowl during the Great Depression and what happened to them once they got to California. It is extremely well written. It makes reading the newspaper in California much more interesting because many of these people have gone on to shape current events

landmark work
Victor Turner is one of the great names in anthropology and this is a classic work of analysis of social rituals. He takes van Gennep's theories on rites of passage to a new level, examining how different elements of festivals and rites function.

The Rocky Mountain Journals of William Marshall Anderson: The West in 1834
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (April, 1987)
Authors: William Marshall Anderson, Eleanor T. Harris, and Dale Lowell Morgan
Average review score:

Significant of the fur trade era
Anderson's journal, diary and narrative are an insightful look into his personal experiences, observations and thoughts during the fur trade year of 1834. Describing the multitude of people, places and events along the soon to be Oregon Trail , I can see why many historians reference his book for this time period. In typical Dale Morgan fashion, the editing is extremely well done, meticulously picking his way mile by mile with Anderson. Also included is the "Galaxy of Mountain Men" which are short but pertinent biographies of forty five men who influenced and helped shape the fur trade and western expansion movement.

Roselle Park (Images of America)
Published in Paperback by Arcadia (April, 2001)
Authors: Pat Pagnetti, Audrey Morgan, and Barbara Sokol
Average review score:

A great trip down memory lane...
This is a very well written history of a very small town in New Jersey. Since I grew up in Roselle Park, it was wonderful to see pictures of the town from long ago. I really enjoyed reading it!

Unfortunately, the above informtion is slightly incorrect. There were actually several authors who created this great book including Audrey Morgan and Barbara Sokol. This book was a huge undertaking (with the help of many people) which resulted in an interesting and thorough record of the town's history.

I highly recommend it to anyone who lives (or ever lived) in Roselle Park. Audrey Morgan, Barbara Sokol and the Pagnettis all did a wonderful job.

Average review score:

Timing is right for release of "Rules for Civilized Behavior
I've read this book, and it's so "right on"! The timing couldn't be better - Rules for Civilized Behavior gives us
the tools and step-by-step answers to behaving civilly toward each other, and toward our world. It's a fast, easy read, and the author displays just a touch of down to earth humor, which makes this an interesting and worthwhile read.

Run That Sucker at Six: The Second Morgan Calabrese Collection
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (June, 1989)
Author: N. Leigh Dunlap
Average review score:

wonderful images of gay community life
Funny, tender and raucous, this author's work deserves to be celebrated. Find and read a used copy if you can. As Scott McCloud says of comics in general, most of the emotion is between the panels-- the evocative nature of the medium bears charming fruit here.

Sappho the Poems: The Poems
Published in Paperback by Bandanna Books (March, 1998)
Authors: Sappho, Sasha Newborn, and Jeanne Morgan
Average review score:

About weddings, flowers, ribbons, regrets...
Sappho takes a special place among the poets of Antiquity.Plato already said that she was the tenth Muse. It's really refreshing to read her poems. They are vivid and she needs only a few words to describe human feelings. She calls solitude:'this icy numbness of being alone'.
One of my favorite poems is 'The wedding of Hektor and Andromache'.In this translation (the poems have no titles) it starts with 'A messenger came running... '. I find this poem one of the most vivid descriptions in ancient poetry. It gives an almost journalistic account of the homecoming of Hektor and Andromache:'At once, the young men of the town hitched the mules up to the big-wheeled carriages ... In the streets people offered
bowls spiced with cinnamon and jars of myrrh and incense'.
(It's a pitty there are only a few rather poor illustrations).

Authors: Aishling Morgan and Aisling Morgan
Average review score:

Don't judge a book by its cover...
but if you did you would find this reads better than the cover looks (and that cover model *does* look wonderous, does she not?). There is little I can say but BUY THIS BOOK NOW; it's amazing.

Save Room for Dessert
Published in Paperback by Coastal Carolina Press (29 October, 2002)
Authors: Eleanor Morgan Hunt and Jimmie Norton Morgan
Average review score:

A must have for anyone who love desserts
I should disclose that I have a bias in that the author is my very own mother and grandmother. But then, I truly know the value of this cookbook because I grew up eating almost all of the desserts in this cookbook.

My mother has always told me that "Anyone can be a good cook. Learn how to pick out a good recipe and then follow it." My mother has done the work for you. These are great recipes and not ones that you will only use here and there but ones that can and will become the staple of your repertoire for years to come. I have waited a long time for the publication of this cookbook, because it collects in one place all the recipes that I know and love together with some of their history. I didn't even know that my favorite, absolutely no fail pecan pie recipe (I won't eat anyone elses) is 70 years old and came from wonderful great Aunt Modina.

I think you will enjoy the recipes in this cookbook as our family has. . . .for generations.

Scared Money
Published in Hardcover by City Miner Books (December, 1994)
Authors: Mark Cramer and Cynthia Morgan
Average review score:

The Definative Fictional Representation of the Horseplayer
Mark Cramer has written a literate and wise book concerning the journey of a man to succeed in an unusaul occupation: a gambler who bets on horse races. This book is well written and is at its center a novel about the battles we all fight within ourselves. The protagonist fights his own self destructive influences as he searches for a path "with a heart."
